Last day in the Serengeti

This morning we were out by 740 to go on our game drive with Frank. We decided just a half day drive to the northern Serengeti. It is so far and long to get to other areas in the Serengeti and we were actually looking forward to a free afternoon. It is a lot of work, scanning and constantly looking for animals. It is also very breezy in the car and lots of dust in the air. So, our eyes get tired.

The whole Serengeti is 12000 square miles.

We had hopes of seeing either more lions, cheetah or leopards. We had been driving very slow down the bumpy dirt road for about an hour when Frank proclaims with great excitement “Oh, there is a lion in the road ahead!”. He stopped and then we drove slower and it spotted us. But, it was not a lion but a big male leopard. It crossed the road, hid behind a bush looking at us and then ran off over the ridge. Frank was so excited, as were we. More safari trucks came by asking what we are looking at, but sad for them, they all missed the leopard.

We continued driving and the other animals we saw were: maribou stork, lilac breasted roller(a beautiful bird, you should Google it), hyrex, Klips springer antelope, Oribi antelope, ostrich and fluffy baby ostrich, and a silver backed jackal.

In 5 hours, we went about 38 miles. A good pace for hunting for animals

We got back to camp in time for lunch and then down time. Dinner is at 7, but we usually head to the main tent around 615 for a beverage. Mike gets a local beer for $3. Sometimes they are 350 ml or 500 ml. Same price. I get a healthy pouring of red wine for $5. Soda is only $1. These are about the same prices as Ngorongoro Farm House. I forgot to mention that at Ngorongoro, we could send out laundry and it will be returned that evening. My linen pants cost $2 and my linen shirt $1. Win!

The lilac breasted roller is beautiful. That would be worth it lol. So many colors. And lions! Wine! Fire! All so nice thanks for sharing.
